  • Introduction

Some installations of IBM PAW and TM1 are bigger, some are smaller. But in all the models we have users, needless to say that. As we have PAW and TM1 (different areas for users), and we have Subscriptions and Roles, I thought it would be a good idea to bring it all together. At the end of the day: I am a TM1 user in a model (admin or not), I have a PAW role and I have a PAW Subscription. The physical person is there 3 times. We need a good dashboard to keep track of all of this !

    A dashboard

Hence, I came to the attached files - made anonymously for you to play around. The dashboard is set up in Excel with the help of Power Query to be able to join several tables (text file dumps) and extract meaningful insights. The Data model in Excel is also used, such that custom measures can be created and added to the pivot tables.

The subscriptions count is useful information that can be captured by an Account Administrator. It can be found under "Subscriptions Management" (PAW > Administration > Users and Groups). Also with Users and Groups, an PAW administrator can list/count the assigned PAW roles. The cherry on the cake is the TM1 userbase that is integrated.

For the TM1 user counts, just execute the TI process that I added near the top of the page.

This leads to an area where you can import all 3 CSV text files and inspect the tables:

Likewise for the TM1 users, which will be client-related information and group-related information. After that, you navigate through all the sheets in order and you refresh all tables (ListObjects) and pivot tables. And you should be good.

Summarized, you will get the counts of:

    • PAW subscriptions: User or Modeler
    • PAW roles: Consumer, Analyst, Modeler, Administrator
    • the combination of PAW subscriptions and roles
    • TM1 clients: administrator or not
    • many more insights and details

Noteworthy is that not 2*4 = 8 combinations would be possible, following the IBM documentation, but only 6. A User subscription should not be coupled with a Modeler or Administrator role. The template workbook makes this visible by listing users in this special case - if any.

The Excel workbook has 2 custom lists set up (see: Options > Advanced > Edit custom lists) such that sorting and filling the 2 lists is easy enough - rather than an alphabetical or manual sort in every pivot table. Besides this, the workbook contains several examples of recent Excel functions, like BYROW, FILTER, the Excel data model for DAX/pivot tables, text values in pivot table cells, etc. You could add slicers if you want to.

The Power Query diagram is as follows:

In the near future we hope to automate this with REST API solutions. Hope that IBM is listening too :-)
